No offense to the cities out there whose claims to fame are having the biggest ball of yarn, or the most wind chimes per capita, but our native Columbus is way cooler than that! This is the original birthplace of Coca-Cola. It’s also touted as Fountain City, USA for the charming and distinctive fountains that decorate the city streets. And Columbus is also home to the longest urban whitewater rafting course in the entire world. Now that’s one cool place to live if there ever was one!
Even if careening down the whitewater of the Chattahoochee River isn’t your cup of tea, Columbus still has endless, other options that are bound to be more appealing, and from our doorstep at TerraBella Riverplace, they’re all just a short drive (or paddle!) away. The RiverWalk, for example, is a 15-mile linear park that follows the Chattahoochee through much of the city. For hiking, biking, or watching adventurers brave the river rapids (or the many, flatwater pools), RiverWalk is a true must-see. There’s also the Dragonfly Trail, a “rails-to-trails” project constructed on an old abandoned rail route.
For lovers of the arts and culture, the Columbus Museum is the second-largest art museum in all of Georgia. RiverCenter for the Performing Arts proudly anchors the city’s Uptown arts and entertainment offerings. And Columbus State University is home to a trio of beautiful venues which range from music and visual arts to the Riverside Theatre Complex, itself providing three year-round performance spaces. Factor in the Columbus Symphony Orchestra, one of the nation’s oldest and finest ensembles, and the city truly does have amazing options that will satisfy even the most fervent arts and theatre clientele.
The Columbus region has provided the backdrop for plenty of history as well, and that rich heritage lives on to this day at many of the museums and historical sites that dot our city’s landscape. Historic Westville is a living history museum, offering an authentic 19th century village complete with 30 buildings and interactive experiences that transport you back in time to the way early settlers once lived and worked. There’s also Springer Opera House and its 150-year history. As a National Historic Landmark, it’s a can’t- miss experience for music and history lovers, as well as ghost hunters, as the Theatre is notoriously haunted! Liberty Theatre is another hallowed hall where musical greats like Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, and Columbus’ own Ma Rainey, the “Mother of the Blues,” once graced the stage.
Columbus also quite literally sits on the doorstep of Fort Benning, the home of the U.S. Army Infantry. A city in its own right, Fort Benning is the sixth-largest US military installation, covering an area of more than 182,000 acres. Home to around 120,000 people, Fort Benning offers a bevy of civilian recreation activities, everything from an 18-hole golf course, mall and swimming pool, to exhibits and monuments that document the rich history of Fort Benning and the U.S. Army Infantry. Columbus is also home to the National Infantry Museum & Soldier Center, and the National Civil War Naval Museum at Port Columbus, itself the only institution in the world dedicated to telling the naval stories from the Civil War.
As you can see, action-packed days and nights are just waiting to be enjoyed here in Columbus, and no matter your own unique likes and preferences, there’s no shortage of excellent options.
